Court Finds for Ex-Boy Band Member in Contract Dispute

Court Finds for Ex-Boy Band Member in Contract Dispute

The Seoul Central District Court on Wednesday found in favor of Han Geng, a former member of popular boy band Super Junior from China, in a suit against his management agency SM Entertainment to terminate his 13-year contract. "The exclusive contract between Han and SM Entertainment is considerably unfair to him as it is unilaterally advantageous to the management agency, which had superior leverage at the time of signing," the court said. "Based on the precedent of other boy/girl bands, it seems that Han would be tied to SM Entertainment for most of the peak years of his career under the current contract." Han (26) signed an exclusive contract with SM Entertainment when he was still in high school in 2003 with his parents present, valid for 10 years following the date of his first album release. Han made a debut as a member of Super Junior in 2005, and renewed his contract for three more years later. The contract contains clauses that allow SM Entertainment to seek compensation from Han as well as suspend his career when he is involved in scandals; gives ownership rights of albums and songs made during the contract to SM Entertainment; and prohibits Han from using songs he wrote the lyrics, music or arrangements without permission from the agency. After filing the lawsuit in December last year, Han left Super Junior and started a solo career in China.

70s Musical Brings Father and Daughter Together

70s Musical Brings Father and Daughter Together
T-ara leader Jeon Bo-ram and her father Jeon Young-rok, himself a hugely popular singer in the 1970s and 80s, have both been cast in the same musical "Crazy for You." The story is based on teen chick lit hit from the 1970s and 1980s, featuring popular songs from the era. It is the first musical for both father and daughter. Jeon Young-rok debuted in 1976 and was a huge star at the time with numerous hit songs and starred in film "Crazy Boy." "You tend to be forgotten by the public if you don't make TV appearances, but I have always sung in small venues, working on films and music albums. These days, every little thing that teen idol group members do makes headlines, but singers of my age have no means of promoting their albums."
Jeon Young-rok and his daughter Bo-ram
When his daughter said she wanted to be a singer, he did not object. "If she feels that it's the right way for her, then that's the way to go," he said. "I also got those genes from my parents (actor Hwang Hae and singer Baek Seol-hee), and that's about the only thing I got from them." Jeong Bo-ram said, "I liked seeing my dad play the guitar and sing. My voice is also low and husky. Maybe I got it from my dad." The musical centers around a high-school baseball team, and Young-rok will play the role of the baseball coach while Bo-ram will play the female lead.

KOSPI Soars Above 2,000 Points

KOSPI Soars Above 2,000 Points
The KOSPI jumped past 2,000 points for the first time in 37 months on Tuesday, closing up 12.46 points or 0.62 percent at 2,009.05. The main index has more than doubled in less than two years and two months after plummeting to 892 points in intraday trading on Oct. 27, 2008 at the height of the global financial crisis. Tuesday's close was the highest since Nov. 7, 2007, when the global economy was booming and investors were lining up to park their cash in equity-linked funds, and some 50 points shy of the record of 2,064.85 on Oct. 31, 2007. Market capitalization, which indicates the size of the bourse, hit a record high on Tuesday at W1,117.3 trillion (US$1=W1,141).

Yet sentiment in domestic brokerages was not as upbeat. Foreign investors were largely responsible for the latest bull run. Advanced countries, including the U.S. and the European Union, have drastically increased liquidity to overcome the financial crisis, and this money has flown to Asia, which has been less affected by the financial meltdown. Foreign investors net bought W53 trillion worth of Korean shares since 2009 and W550 billion on Tuesday. Most analysts forecast the KOSPI will rise even higher since the global economy is overflowing with capital, while globally-competitive Korean companies are emerging with vastly improved earnings results. But there are concerns that the South European fiscal mess, fiscal tightening by China and the lackluster pace of U.S. economic recovery could slam on the brakes.

2 Koreas Lobby Russia for Support

2 Koreas Lobby Russia for Support
Senior South and North Korean foreign ministry officials are visiting Russia almost simultaneously this week to persuade Moscow of their point of view about the North's artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island and its uranium program. South Korea's chief nuclear negotiator Wi Sung-lac is to meet Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin on Wednesday, while North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Monday. Russian officials did not directly blame the North for the torpedo attack on the South Korean Navy corvette Cheonan in March, but Lavrov himself strongly denounced the North for the shelling of Yeonpyeong. However, Russia, a participating nation of the six-party nuclear talks, believes China's proposal for a meeting of chief negotiators in the talks should be discussed, whereas South Korea, the U.S. and Japan have rejected the idea. A South Korean Foreign Ministry official said, "Russia too is concerned about the North's recent disclosure of a uranium enrichment facility, so we'll explain to Russian officials that the position of Seoul, Washington and Tokyo is to demand that the North stop uranium enrichment, and ask Russia to join us." Russia, like China, is a permanent UN Security Council member. The North's Pak reportedly asked Lavrov for Russia's support and relayed the regime's claim that the shelling of Yeonpyeong was a response to a "preemptive strike" by the South. Lavrov visited Pyongyang in April last year. Although they are visiting Russia during the same period, Wi has no plan to meet Pak in Moscow, a Foreign Ministry official said.
