Figure skating champion Kim Yu-na has been named Sportswoman of the Year by the U.S.-based Women's Sports Foundation. Founded in 1974 by tennis great Billie Jean King, the organization promotes sports among economically marginalized women and girls. Kim is the first Asian athlete to win the award, which has been given since 1993. She was considered last year as well, but the honor went to U.S. gymnast Courtney Kupets. "In many countries, girls are still unwilling to participate in sports due to social prejudices," Kim said in an acceptance speech in New York on Wednesday. "I am glad for this opportunity to bring more attention to the sport of figure skating so that more girls can become interested and inspired to participate." Ten athletes who made outstanding achievements between August last year and July this year were up for the award, with the winner chosen through an online poll. Seven were from the U.S.: tennis champ Serena Williams, alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn, track and field star Sanya Richards, sailor Anna Tunnicliffe, gymnast Rebecca Bross, wheelchair basketball player and alpine skier Alana Nichols, and bowler Kelly Kulick. The other two were golfer Ai Miyazato of Japan and Australian snowboarder Torah Bright. Past recipients include professional golfers Julie Inkster (1999; U.S.), Annika Sörenstam (2004; Sweden) and Lorena Ochoa (2007; Mexico). Kim is the third figure skater to win the award after Michelle Kwan (1998; U.S.) and Sarah Hughes (2002; U.S.).
