Mao Asada Disappoints at Japan Open

Mao Asada Disappoints at Japan Open

2010 World Champion figure skater Mao Asada began the new season with a rocky start on Saturday, showcasing her worst performance since her senior debut in 2005. At the Japan Open in Saitama Prefecture, Asada skated to a new free program to Franz Liszt's "Liebestraum." She received 92.44 points, well below her personal best of 133.13 and previous low of 98.34 set in October last year. The Japanese skater failed a try at a triple axel, and received full credit for only one out of seven jump attempts. Asada had been training to improve her jumping technique with Coach Hiroshi Nagakubo since June. But she parted ways with Nagakubo after naming Nobuo Sato as her main coach last month, and the change seems to have affected her jumps. The Japan Open invites national teams from Japan, Europe and North America composed of skaters of both genders to compete in the one-day event. The winner is determined by the sum of free skate scores. Despite Asada's disappointing performance, the Japanese team including Miki Ando, Takahiko Kozuka and Daisuke Takahashi won the event with a total score of 517.36 points.
