Football Sensation Ji So-yun Signs with Japanese Team
Ji So-yun
Teenage football star Ji So-yun will launch her professional career in Japan next year. Ji's management agency All That Sports announced that she has signed a two-year deal with INAC Kobe Leonessa in Japan's L1 League with an option of renewal after the first year. The 19-year-old midfielder, who led Korea to a third-place finish in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in August, initially aimed for the Women's Professional Soccer League, the top women's league in the U.S. A number of WPS teams showed interest in Ji, including the Western New York Flash and the Boston Breakers. But as the situation in the WPS became unstable in recent months and a number of teams folded due to financial difficulties, Ji decided to head to Japan instead. INAC Kobe is owned by a Korean-Japanese businessman, and finished fourth out of 10 teams in Japan's highest league in the 2010 season. Lee Jin-hwa, who currently plays for the Daekyo Kangaroos WFC in Korea, played for Kobe in 2006, and Jung Mi-jung, who plays for the Seoul Metropolitan Government, in 2007. Ji, who is scheduled to join the team's training camp in Japan this month, said, "I'm happy that I made it into an overseas league. I plan to learn a lot and show my improved skills in the future."
