Korea's Population Exceeds 50 Million
Korea has issued the 50-millionth resident registration number. The Ministry of Public Administration and Security said Kim Sung-mee, a baby girl born on Sept. 13, received the 50-millionth resident registration number in Bucheon on Sept. 30.The number just ahead of her went to a woman from Vietnam who married a Korean in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province, and the 50,000,001st resident registration number went to a baby born in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. The government began issuing resident registration numbers in 1968, with the first going to President Park Chung-hee, while his wife Yuk Young-soo was the first woman to get one. The population tallied by resident registration numbers reached 30.44 million in January 1969 and hit 40 million in January 1984. As of the end of September this year, Korea's total population stands at 50,001,273.
