Pitcher Lim Chang-yong Tipped for Mega Salary Deal

Korean pitcher Lim Chang-yong of the Yakult Swallows in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league may be about to score a salary home run. Sports Nippon reported Thursday that Yakult plans to offer Lim a three-year contract for 900 million yen, as the 34-year-old closer became a free agent at the end of this season. Lim signed with Yakult in 2008 for an annual salary of US$300,000, which means the deal would bump up his income tenfold. It would also make him the highest-paid pitcher on the team. Lim had his best season in Japan this year, recording one win, two losses, and 35 saves. His ERA of 1.46 was the lowest among closers in the Central League, and he was second in the league in saves, trailing only Hitoki Iwase of the Chunichi Dragons with 42. Lim may be in for an ever heftier deal, as the big three teams in the Central League -- the Yomiuri Giants, Hanshin Tigers, and Chunichi Dragons -- are all eyeing him. Yomiuri and Hanshin are likely to woo Lim as Yomiuri closer Marc Kroon performed below expectations this season, while Hanshin closer Kyuji Fujikawa is looking to move to the MLB.
